We’ve been following the evolution of the 5th generation wireless technology closely since its inception. The 5G concept has been more of an abstract idea that would represent an extreme advantage to the cord cutting industry. On October 1, the 5G myth will become a reality for anyone who’s signed up with Verizon’s newest home wireless service.
Verizon has been working on developing the 5G concept for years, and on September 13 they made signups for the service publicly available. The idea of 5G creates a global connectivity that we’ve never considered possible before. Download speeds will be astronomically better, and allow you to stream your favorite programs, movies, and music 30 to 50 times faster than current 4G networks.
In a statement released to the public, Verizon had this to say about their newest offering:
“Verizon 5G Home customers should expect typical network speeds around 300 Mbps and, depending on location, peak speeds of nearly 1 Gig, with no data caps. Verizon 5G Home is ideal for consumers looking to ‘cut the cord’ or upgrade from their current cable service.”
With Verizon publicly acknowledging the cord cutting phenomenon, it’s hard to downplay the mass exodus from pay-TV. The introduction of 5G will take cord cutting to the next level, and people will be able to download entire movies and series in just a matter of seconds on their mobile devices. This means you can take your entertainment with you anywhere you go as long as you have access to a 5G network.
Insiders think that this is only the beginning. The introduction of the newest wireless technology opens other carriers up to the possibility of adding it to their services, and this is expected to happen pretty fast. There’s already talk of AT&T developing their own 5G network, and there’s no doubt that companies like Comcast Xfinity aren’t far behind.
5G connectivity is the future of downloadable data and wireless technology. This is the gateway to constant real-time communication paired with unimaginable transfer speeds—and it represents a constant oasis to cord cutters everywhere. This means an end to the “buffering” that’s created hesitation when breaking away from traditional cable companies in the past.
Verizon is offering new customers 3-months of free service, 3-months of YouTube TV, a free Apple TV 4K, and free installation. This should buy them enough time to work out the bugs while locking as many consumers into new contracts as possible. This is a good indicator of how competitive the 5G landscape is about to become—and how exciting new innovations will be for cord cutters and pay-TV subscribers alike.
