Hulu + Live TV Overview
Aren’t add-ons great? With them, you can customize your Hulu subscription to your liking. Hulu offers add-ons and premium channels for its cable-alternative packages, Hulu + Live TV and Premium + Live TV. So, if you have Hulu Basic or Hulu No Ads, most of these extras and add-ons won’t apply to you. Hulu’s premium cable-alternative packages are a great option if you’re considering cutting the cable TV cord.
The key difference between cable-alternative services and on-demand apps like Netflix is how the former functions like traditional TV. Just like cable and satellite, there are over 65 live national networks to choose from that include channels like CBS, Disney Channel, ESPN, FS1, FX and NBC Sports Network. Your Hulu + Live TV package also comes with 50 hours of cloud DVR storage, letting you save live programming for future viewing.
What Is a “Premium” Channel?
Premium channels are typically on-demand subscription services like HBO and STARZ that carry movies and shows. Most premium channels also have exclusive original content like documentaries, films and series. For example, HBO produces its own content like Game of Thrones and Sopranos. You can add premium channels to your TV subscription for an additional monthly fee.
Hulu Premium Channels
There are a few premium channels that you can choose from to punch up your Hulu + Live TV subscription.
Cinemax contains hundreds of movies from blockbusters to classic favorites and constantly cycles new titles through its catalog. Some of the most recent movies available are Collateral Beauty, First Man, Don’t Let Go and Mortal Engines. On top of movies, there are a decent number of original series like Banshee, C.B. Strike, Jett, The Knick, Warrior and a few more. You can add Cinemax to your Hulu + Live TV package for $9.99/mo.
Hulu And HBO
Hulu plus HBO just got even better. HBO’s new streaming app HBO Max is a standalone streaming service meant to compete with the likes of Netflix. HBO Max costs $14.99/mo. and offers a healthy number of features. With your HBO Max account, you’ll have the ability to create up to five user profiles. And HBO Max works better for families with kids when compared to other HBO apps, letting you make profiles specifically designed for children. You won’t need to worry about running out of screens since HBO Max works with up to four simultaneously.
In addition to all of HBO’s beloved content like The Wire, Watchmen and Westworld, you’ll have access to a library of AT&T owned content. HBO Max boasts a library with iconic shows like Adventure Time, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Friends, Pretty Little Liars, Rick and Morty and South Park.
SHOWTIME generates some of the most recognizable exclusive series outside of HBO. With titles like Billions, Dexter, Homeland, Shameless and Ray Donovan, SHOWTIME nicely edges out a place for itself in the market of compelling series. And like the other premium channels on this list, circulates a number of popular flicks.
SHOWTIME can be added to your Hulu + Live TV package for $10.99/mo.
STARZ is priced at $8.99/mo., and like the rest of the premium channels on this list includes original series and movies in its catalog. Binge-worthy exclusives, just to name a few, include: America to me, American Gods, Outlander, Power, The Rook, The Spanish, The White Queen and Wrong Man. There are also a number of popular movies cycling through its catalog. Popular movies in the STARZ catalog include Jumanji: The Next Level, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Spider-man: Far From Home, The Equalizer 2, Venom and Zombieland: Double Tap.
Outside of premium channels, Hulu has a few channel and feature add-ons.
Enhanced Cloud DVR
Cloud DVR is one of the highlights of any TV experience. With DVR you can save your favorite shows or sporting events to watch later. And better yet, you can zoom through commercials, pause and rewind without a hitch. Every Hulu + Live TV and Premium + Live TV account already comes with 50 hours of cloud DVR storage.
If 50 hours of cloud DVR storage isn’t enough, you can boost your storage space to 200 hours for $9.99/mo. In addition to upgraded storage, you’ll have the power to record from limitless devices. You’re not married to any one device like your TV either. You can stream your recorded content from any of your devices since it’s all in the cloud.
With the Entertainment add-on, you can slap on 11 additional channels to your Hulu + Live TV package for an extra monthly cost of $7.99/mo. These extra channels consist of entertainment, lifetime and news networks. The full list of channels with the Entertainment add-on is as follows:
Spanish language audiences can take advantage of Hulu’s Español add-on for only $4.99/mo. You’ll get entertainment, news and sports programming for one low rate. This is an incredible value since ESPN Deportes and FOX Deportes are high-valued sports channels. Here’s what you get with the complete bundle.
Hulu has somewhat of a lackluster sharing feature compared to other streaming services out there. Every Hulu account lets you stream on two screens at the same time. For most households, this simply isn’t enough. You can upgrade the number of screens with the Unlimited Screens add-on for $9.99/mo. By enhancing your sharing capabilities with the Unlimited Screens feature, you’ll expand to unlimited screens within your home and will be able to operate with three screens while away from your household network.
Disney Plus Bundle
The Disney Plus bundle combines Disney Plus, ESPN+ and Hulu for $12.99/mo. Each app still works separately with all of the service’s exclusive content and features. You can also save with the Disney Plus bundle if you have Hulu + Live TV. For the cost of $61.99/mo., you’ll get access to all of the aforementioned apps plus over 60 live national channels.
Hulu Premium Channels And Add-Ons Compared
Hulu + Live TV lets you indulge yourself with quite a few add-ons and extras. But, how does Hulu stack up against other cable-alternative services?
fuboTV carries quite a few more channels bundled together for a similar value. But there are a few caveats. But first, let’s take a look at the plans. Hulu offers two live TV plans, whereas fuboTV has five — fubo Standard ($54.99/mo.), Family ($59.99/mo.), Family Plan with Showtime ($69.99/mo.), Ultra ($84.99/mo.) and fubo Latino ($29.99/mo.)
fuboTV also has an add-on for elevating your cloud DVR storage. It costs $9.99/mo., which is the same value as Hulu’s enhanced cloud DVR option. But instead of 200 hours, you’ll receive 500 hours of space. fuboTV’s Family Share add-on isn’t as impressive as Hulu’s Unlimited Screens alternative, but at least it’s only priced at $5.99/mo. Hulu also takes the edge with Premium Channel add-ons, since fuboTV only offers Showtime ($10.99/mo.) and AMC Premiere ($4.99/mo.)
However, fuboTV wins with not only channel add-ons but sports overall, including packages like Adventure Plus ($4.99/mo.), fubo Cycling ($11.99/mo.), fubo Extra ($5.99/mo.), International Sports ($5.99/mo.), Latino Plus ($19.99/mo.), Sports Plus with NFL Redzone ($10.99/mo.) and a few others.
There are three packages to choose between on Sling TV — Sling Orange ($30/mo.), Sling Blue ($30/mo.) and Sling Orange + Blue ($45/mo.) Sling Orange and Sling Blue offer variations of similar add-ons. For example, Sling Orange’s Kids Extra add-on ($5/mo.) includes Baby TV, Boomerang, Disney Junior, Disney XD, Duck TV, Nick Jr., Nicktoons and TeenNick. Sling Blue’s Kids Extra add-on is priced the same but doesn’t include the Disney channels.
Sling TV also has a good reputation when it comes to add-ons. So, it’s safe to say that it carries more channels and feature add-ons than Hulu. Cloud DVR Plus only costs $5/mo. but raises your cloud DVR storage from the standard 10 hours of storage that comes with each package to 50 hours. There are plenty of bundles to sift through like Comedy Extra ($5/mo.), Kids Extra ($5/mo.), Lifestyle Extra ($5/mo.), News Extra ($5/mo.) and Sports Extra ($10/mo.) Ultimately, there are far more add-ons and extras to search within Sling TV’s subscriptions, giving it a bit of an advantage over Hulu.
Hulu offers a number of add-ons and premium channels for you to upgrade your Hulu + Live TV package. It doesn’t provide nearly as many options as Sling TV, which gives you dozens of add-ons that you can use to customize your experience a la carte. But with Hulu, you’ll be able to upgrade your package with a few channel bundles, feature upgrades and premium channels.
