Netflix Prepares to Release Its Most Anticipated Movie of 2017

On Dec. 22, the streaming service plans to release its newest movie in its blockbuster lineup: Bright.

Netflix has taken their filmmaking prowess to a new level—and fans can’t wait to see what happens next. On December 22, the streaming service plans to release its newest movie in its blockbuster lineup.

With a $90 million budget, and an all-star cast, Bright has quickly become one of the most highly anticipated Netflix releases of all time. Will Smith takes the lead as Daryl Ward, an officer with the Los Angeles Police Department working alongside mythical middle-earth characters in an alternate reality.

Ward’s rookie partner, played by Joel Edgerton, is an orc that gets more than he bargains for when the duo discovers an ancient magic wand that could change the fate of their world. The announcement of this project was as exciting for the cord-cutting community as it was for fans of the A-list actors.

Smith will be the latest in a long line of top tier celebrities to make the leap over to streaming services– sharing their talent on a platform with more creative freedom than many traditional film studios.

Bright, directed by David Ayer (Suicide Squad), is rumored to be the most expensive movie Netflix has ever made. This will deliver the same kind of big budget box office hit usually reserved for theaters directly to Netflix subscribers.

If Netflix manages to bypass the big screen, it could mean bad news for major film production companies who are already losing money. Smith voiced his support for both sides of the entertainment industry, saying—

“I have a 16-year-old, a 19-year-old, and a 25-year-old at home, and their viewing habits are almost anthropological. It’s a great study to see how they still go to the movies on Friday and Saturday night, and they watch Netflix all week. It’s two completely different experiences.”
