This mayhem maven started in 1953 on a station in Detroit before going national on ABC and ultimately turning up in syndication. It was, literally, pie-in-the-face humor, with Sales claiming that he's had more than 25,000 whipped-cream facials. He was once given a week's suspension for asking young viewers to send him the `little green pieces of paper' from their dads' wallets.
1:00 PMThe Jerry Lewis Show
Jerry Lewis hosted two prime-time variety shows. One was a fiasco, the other ran for two seasons. The first was a big-budget, two-hour affair telecast live from Hollywood's El Capitan Theatre. It premiered with great fanfare, but was greeted rudely by critics and with apathy by viewers. Dick Cavett was one of its writers. In the other (an hourlong show), Lewis played his movie characters in sketches. The Osmonds were frequent guests. Les Brown was the bandleader for both series.
