7:30 PMM*A*S*H
A beloved, multi-Emmy-winning series about Army surgeons cutting up amid the Korean War. 'War is hell. So is TV,' said Larry Gelbart, who developed the series for TV from the 1970 Robert Altman film. ' 'M*A*S*H' and the medium,' Gelbart added, 'were made for each other.' For 11 years (10 in the Top 20), the show deftly blended sharp, thoughtful humor with moving scenes of dedicated, stressed doctors trying to save lives---while clinging to their own sanity---in a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital.
8:00 PMThe Andy Griffith Show
Gentle humor and genuinely likable characters made Mayberry a beloved fixture on the TV landscape. A Top 10 hit throughout its eight-year run (it went out at No. 1), this low-key, down-home sitcom harkened back to a simpler time and place. Mayberry may be a state of mind, but the sunny optimism and simple virtues it represents have actually been set in stone--in a Raleigh, N.C., statue depicting Sheriff Andy Taylor and his son, Opie. `[The show's] central theme was love,' Griffith said.

9:00 PMGomer Pyle, USMC
`Well, gollllly!' The misadventures of a naive Marine recruit who marched to a different drummer. The sitcom was a spin-off from `The Andy Griffith Show,' where the bumpkinish Gomer worked as a gas-station attendant until enlisting in the peacetime service. His aw-shucks demeanor and general bumbling constantly put him at odds with dyspeptic Sgt. Carter, who, over the series' five-year tour of duty, gradually came to appreciate Gomer's down-home goodness.
9:30 PMGreen Acres
A popular, broadly played hoot about a city couple enjoying life down on the farm. The show came on the heels of `Petticoat Junction' and `The Beverly Hillbillies,' making CBS the place to be for cornpone comedy in the 1960s. Regulars from `Acres' and `Junction' routinely crossed over---easy enough since both series were set in the town of Hooterville.
10:00 PMHogan's Heroes
Farcical tales of Allied POWs in World War II at the expense of their bumbling German captors. Bob Crane, in his signature role, made mental mincemeat of his enemies. And while the topic of Nazis as humor might seem odd (though it worked for Ernst Lubitsch in 1942's `To Be or Not to Be' and, more recently, for Mel Brooks in `The Producers'), the series was highly popular and garnered Werner Klemperer, himself a refugee from Nazi Germany, two Emmys for his role as inept camp commander Klink.

11:00 PMCarol Burnett and Friends
Comedy sketches from `The Carol Burnett Show.'
11:30 PMPerry Mason
Classic courtroom drama about an L.A. lawyer (adapted from author Erle Stanley Gardner's novels) who seemed incapable of losing a case, thanks to his brilliant deductive reasoning and his uncanny ability to break witnesses on the stand. The formula was as predictable as the verdict, but the long-running series (nine seasons) was crisply paced and beautifully acted. Nearly 20 years after the series ended, Raymond Burr returned to his Emmy-winning role in a number of successful TV-movies.
12:30 AMThe Twilight Zone
A classic anthology of sci-fi, suspense and goose-bump-inducing tales that explore 'a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man.' Filled with invention and irony, the stories are tightly constructed, ingenious flights of imagination with often cautionary themes---and frequently a terrific twist at the end.
1:00 AMAlfred Hitchcock Presents
`Good eeevening.' Hitchcock's classic half-hour series (it expanded to an hour in 1962) has him dryly introducing (and later summing up) each twist-filled story, with many a memorable dig at the sponsor (`Our play tonight is a blend of mystery and medicine. It follows this one-minute anesthetic'). Hitchcock directed some episodes, as did Robert Altman, Sydney Pollack and William Friedkin.

2:00 AMMannix
A tough, cynical PI works L.A. in a long-running series of crime tales that were taut and violent. Originally, Joe Mannix worked for an ultracomputerized organization; later, he set up his own shop. But mayhem always predominated.
3:00 AMCannon
Rough and rotund Frank Cannon was (in one sense) the biggest TV detective of the '70s. The L.A. PI was no `Hollywood god,' conceded his portrayer, William Conrad. But he cared and it showed. `Cannon' was a staple of producer Quinn Martin's detective stable for five seasons. It was up for a Best Drama Emmy in '73, and Conrad was nominated for Best Drama Actor in '73 and '74. A 1980 TV-movie had Conrad reprising the role, coming out of retirement to investigate a friend's reported suicide.
4:00 AMBarnaby Jones
Soon after his success in `The Beverly Hillbillies,' Buddy Ebsen was back in L.A. as a folksy PI who leaves retirement to track his son's killer, and, of course, stays on to handle more cases. The popular cop series played on Jones' deductive smarts, often concealed by an easygoing, down-home manner.
5:00 AMHighway Patrol
Chief Dan Mathews is a tough guy with a gruff voice fighting crime somewhere in the West in a gritty series lent much dramatic heft by Oscar winner Broderick Crawford (`All the King's Men'). A major hit in syndication, the show is memorable for its framing of tight shots, quick-cut edits and Crawford's Buick Special, which he seemed forever to be leaning against, shouting into his two-way radio, `10-4! 10-4! 10-4!'
5:30 AMDragnet
The classic cop drama follows the cases of laconic Sgt. Joe Friday and his various sidekicks in storylines drawn from actual case files. Originally a radio vehicle for star Jack Webb, the Emmy-winning series was a pioneer in its realistic depiction of police work, though its staccato, just-the-facts dialogue and voice-over narration became the stuff of parody.

6:30 AMMy Three Sons
One of TV's most durable and wholesome sitcoms is about widower Steve Douglas and his boys, who shared a house with their maternal grandfather, and later, their crotchety uncle. The series was originally scheduled to be a vehicle for the Lennon Sisters of `Lawrence Welk Show' fame. Characters came and went, but this was an endearing, highly rated series throughout its 1960-72 run; when it moved from ABC to CBS in 1965, Mike, the eldest, was written out, and replaced by adopted son Ernie.
7:00 AMToon In With Me
The show combines witty original characters, quick comedy sketches, surprises, and more.
